HD 37289, also known as HR 1916, is a solitary,[11] orange hued star located in the northern circumpolar constellation Camelopardalis. It has an apparent magnitude of 5.61,[2] making it faintly visible to the naked eye under ideal conditions. Based on parallax measurements from the Gaia spacecraft, the object is estimated to be 308 light years distant.[1] It appears to be approaching the Sun, having a heliocentric radial velocity of −20.7 km/s.[5]

HD 37289 has a stellar classification of K5 III,[3] indicating that it is an evolved red giant. Gaia DR3 stellar evolution models place it on the red giant branch.[1] This means that it is currently fusing a hydrogen shell around an inert helium core. At present it has 3.3 times the mass of the Sun and at the age of 293 million years,[1] it has expanded to a radius of 13.6 R.[7] It radiates at 70 times the luminosity of the Sun[8] from its enlarged photosphere at an effective temperature of 4,360 K.[10] HD 37289 has been calculated to have a metallicity approximately around solar level.[10]
